Caesar himself also built in Alexandria, and in 57- 55 BC Aulus Gabinius (cos. 68 BC) began the Roman reconstruction of Antioch, to be followed by Pompeius and Caesar. From Sulla's reconstruction of the Temple of Capitoline Jupiter after the fire of 83 BC to the innovative Theater and Portico of Pompeius and the numerous unusual projects of Julius Caesar, the period 80-30 BC was an era of relentless construction.1 This was not limited to the capital itself: the great cities of the East, feeling the Roman presence for the first time, were also beneficiaries. Architectural programs became a visible element of political power, and prominent personalities commissioned as many as possible.
